Here are some highlights from November and December's lessons!
ACT Profile and Career Inventories
- Our discussions about careers began with students taking a brief career inventory using their newly created ACT Profile account. ACT Profile is a great tool for middle school students to use because it connects them with career and college information! Encourage your student to log into their account and show you the new careers they found that interest them.
Skills to Pay the Bills: Communication
- Our lessons following ACT Profile focused on the importance of communication skills in the workplace. We discussed that communication is more than simply verbal and covers a wide range of skills! Here's a snapshot of what we discussed:
- Body Language
- Students learned through role plays the value of appropriate body language! Ask your student to demonstrate the correct way to shake your hand as well as the proper way to maintain eye contact.
- Specificity
- Employers and employees often fall into the trap of not truly saying what they mean. Through fun role plays students learned the value of being specific with their needs.
- Asking Questions & Following Directions
- Students made some unique snow flakes and learned the value of asking questions. Ask your student to teach you to make a snow flake with your eyes closed! Through this process students learned the value of asking questions to make ensure they understand their future employers expectations. We also learned the value of following directions through a short tree minute quiz. Ask your student to tell you about the importance of reading everything before you do anything!
