This month's classroom counseling lessons focused on bullying prevention. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, so this month's lessons taught students how to identify bullying, how to resolve conflicts, and how to not be a bystander.
Here are some highlights from our lessons this month. Please speak with your students about these important topics.

ABCD's of Bullying
- Often bullying is misidentified by students, parents, and teachers, so this lesson's purpose was to help students truly understand what bullying is. Using the Savvy School Counselor's reference handout we spoke about the four different aspects of bullying. Please speak with your students about the four distinct aspects of bullying.
- With the help of some role plays, students and I spoke about the difference between conflict and bullying. Often these two terms are confused, so students and I discussed how to identify conflict and how to resolve conflict. Conflict does not involve an imbalance of power and is less consistent than bullying. Conflict resolution can be helped along by using I-messages. Ask your students about the simple I-message formula they can use to help resolve their own conflict!
- Bystanders are individuals who stand by and watch as bad things happen to other people. Students and I had a lively discussion about how to not be a bystander. Speak with your students about the difference between tattling and reporting. Help continue our bullying prevention efforts by encouraging your students to not simply stand by as bullying happens!
